This client's target market is the USA. During and after September we expected to see a decline in visitors due to the September 11 events but surprisingly the visiting rate stabilized a bit in September and increased thereafter. Qualified leads, enquiries and newsletter subscriptions also increased during this period.

Comparison: Hits vs visits:
Traffic should be measured by Hits alone. Taken into account that hits are an indication of the amount of single requests from the server vs visits being time spent by the visitors within the site, a hit rate vs a visiting rate can be calculated and used to determine which percentage of of hits turn into visitors.
Example: during July the hit rate was low and the visiting rate high. This indicates that the visitors to the site spent time in the site. In August, the hit rate exceeded the visitor rate, indicating that more people clicked through to the site and left the site again - they did not spend time within the site. This occurred in October again, but not in November and December.
So what does it mean?
The above proved that FFA's drive non-qualified traffic to the site. We adjusted by removing the site from all link farms and focused on industry related directories (vertical search engines) driving targeted traffic to the site.
